The U S Supreme Court ruled the Belvedere armed robbery case of Kenneth Dale Lanier must return to the South Carolina Supreme Court for further study. Justices questioned whether Lanier’s voluntary confession, given after an arrest without a warrant, can be admitted. Lanier was convicted in Aiken County on July 20 1983 and sentenced to 20 years for an April 1983 robbery.
Secretary of State George P. Shultz met with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow for nearly four hours as pre summit planning continued for the November U S Soviet talks. No formal progress was stated and participants said the session aimed to set an agenda. Shultz with McFarlane Hartman and Shevardnadze attended with Dobrynin on the Soviet side. Ridgway cautioned on characterizing any advances from the talks.
