Six thousand South Vietnamese troops launched a wide front drive across southeastern Cambodia in a large land river and air operation. The effort aims to choke off infiltration into the Mekong Delta to destroy rebuilt North Vietnamese bases and ease pressure on Phnom Penh. The move spans about 100 miles along the border toward Takeo while U.S. destroyer Rowan shelled targets below the border with 16 secondary explosions reported.
A white male entered Milner's Service Station at 930 Richland Ave. W. and robbed the attendant Maurice Walton of an undetermined amount with a 22 caliber rifle. Walton said the suspect was average height and slender, alone, and fled down Vaucluse Road. Milner Jr. notes this is the third robbery at the station in under a year. Police responded around 10:55 p.m. with two patrol units and a detective.
A recount to decide the fourth South Carolina House seat in Aiken County began at 9 a.m. with about a dozen boxes tabulated by noon. Williams led Weeks unofficially by 83 votes of 19 278 cast, as the county election board counted ballots including scratched names and straight ticket marks. The four seats include three Republican winners and one incumbent Democrat.
