North Augusta council upholds video poker zoning denial

North Augusta City Council, with a slim quorum, voted 40 to deny rezoning on Buena Vista Avenue that would have allowed more video poker. The current general commercial tract houses bingo and nonconforming video poker machines slated for removal after court action. Cecil Barnes, owner, offered to sell the land.

Write-in drama dots sparse election in House District 82

Aiken County reports sparse turnout with a last minute write in campaign for Charles Stone against unopposed Democratic Rep. Bill Clyburn in District 82 which covers Edgefield County and part of Aiken County. Clyburn acknowledged the write in but said he does not know who started it. Stone, 72, previously served two terms and lost significant support after redistricting.

GOP seeks to keep top jobs in key states and cities

Republicans aimed to hold control of major offices in Virginia New Jersey and New York City. Polls indicated Rudolph Giuliani would win reelection in New York City as voters chose mayors in Atlanta Houston Seattle Miami and Minneapolis. Ballot measures touched on assisted death marijuana use and gay rights while Houston debated affirmative action. President Clinton campaigned in Virginia for Democrat Don Beyer as Gilmore surged.

State land deal worth $54 million

South Carolina bought 32000 acres of Jocassee Gorges land near the North Carolina and Georgia borders for about 54 million. The Duke Energy gift funded most of the price with a 10 million anonymous donor tied to the Mellon Foundation and The Conservation Fund. The state also allocated 10 million in bonds and 1 million from the Natural Resources Department.
