Phil Silvers 73, best known as Sgt Bilko, was honored at a Sunday funeral in Mount Sinai Cemetery. Colleagues including Milton Berle Red Buttons Sid Caesar Danny Thomas and Morey Amsterdam shared stories as about 100 mourners attended.

In New York the Best of the Best gala at the Metropolitan Opera House drew nearly 4000 attendees and raised 1.3 million dollars for AIDS groups including the AIDS Medical Foundation AIDS Resource Center and the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Performers such as Marilyn Horne Carol Burnett Melissa Manchester Peter Allen Bette Midler Lily Tomlin and Mikhail Baryshnikov joined Dorothy Loudon Chita Rivera Liz Smith and Brooke Shields among others in a variety show capped by a mayoral pledge to combat AIDS. Proceeds benefit AIDS medical and community support organizations and research efforts.
