Burnettown Race Decisive in Low Turnout General Election

Robert F Workman and Wayne Benson won two Burnettown Town Council seats as only a few races drew voters. Turnout under five percent across 23 precincts followed Supreme Court removal of a statewide video poker referendum. Mary R Thompson won a Perry seat while Perry figures Robin P Williams and Dianne Keadie contested Seat 4. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh was re-elected in Aiken with 891 votes amid sparse contests.

Elderly Bath woman testifies in Hutto rape case

An 92 year old Bath resident testified in Aiken County court that Thomas Allen Hutto broke into her home before dawn on July 15 1998 and raped her. Prosecutor Lawrence Brown presented evidence collection and DNA findings while defense counsel challenged admissibility of the blood evidence. The trial also faces charges of first degree burglary armed robbery and criminal sexual conduct potentially carrying a life sentence if convicted.

New Home Depot set for grand opening in Aiken

Council OKs newcomer to Sage Mill

Aiken County Council unanimously approved an early entry and indemnification deal with ARNCO, enabling site preparation for a 14 acre Sage Mill Industrial Park plant. ARNCO, NY based, plans to invest over 3 million dollars and create up to 40 jobs, with final agreements to follow.

S C Bar members criticize Judge Huff

South Carolina Bar evaluators say about one in five lawyers rate Appeals Court Judge Thomas Huff as deficient in legal skills while 30 percent or more rate him good or excellent. The survey covered 31 judges with ratings on legal ability impartiality temperament and promptness based on at least 50 lawyer evaluations.
