Local high school squads prepare for state playoff weekend with teams in contention and districts focusing on seeding. Coaches cite week of practice and injury updates as key factors shaping criteria for advancement.
Auditor Cyrus Spradley said at least two thousand homeowners in Aiken County will receive zero tax bills this year due to the states 150 percent increase in the homestead exemption for seniors over 65 and the handicapped. The county will not lose revenue as the state reimburses the full amount, while some fire protection fees may appear on bills.
The Willcox Inn in Aiken, a 102 year old landmark, is sold to Vermont based Garrett Hotel Group. The new owners aim to restore the historic resort to its former prestige, with restoration set to begin next summer.
The House Ways and Means Committee made substantial progress in cutting state bus costs. Rep. James Roland Smith said changes in bus purchase regulations could lead to a five digit unit price reduction. He cited about $10,000 saved per bus by downsizing engines from 250 to 215 horsepower for buses carrying 66 to 78 passengers.
In Tallahassee Clemson faces Florida State with former high school rivals Jamal Reynolds and TJ Watkins set to clash as the Bowden era meets the Bowden era. Reynolds leads the ACC with 10 sacks while Clemson weighs quarterback options with Woodrow Dantzler possibly returning from injuries.
In South Carolina, Rep. Floyd Spence faces Democrat Jane Frederick in a 2nd District race that spans Columbia to Hilton Head. Frederick, a Beaufort architect and mother of two, hopes a district tour shifts momentum after narrowly trailing in 1996. Also running are George Taylor and Timothy Moultrie.
