Germany SRS may work out fuel deal
The Savannah River Site may accept and process used German nuclear fuel containing about 900 kilograms of HEU. DOE plans an environmental assessment and a June 24 public scoping meeting at the North Augusta Community Center. If approved, a processing system at SRS would remove graphite via graphite digestion technology developed by the Savannah River National Laboratory. Officials say no decision has been made to accept the fuel. The effort supports reducing HEU in civil commerce, with ongoing work funded by past and recent agreements. CAB members previously opposed foreign nuclear material receipts.
