Officials said the endangered California condor population reached 50 with a 200th chick hatching. The Los Angeles Zoo reported Teneiya born Saturday, the eighth chick this year and second for parents Pismo and AC6. It is believed to be the 50th condor overall.
Charles B. Bartholomew of Norman received six months in jail after a no contest plea to two felony animal cruelty counts in Bryan County District Court. A third count was dismissed. The deal blocks federal charges and requires Bartholomew to aid federal probes of seven others including bear sellers, hunters, and a taxidermist.

The Commerce Department reports GNP fell 2.6 percent from January through March, the first back-to-back quarterly decline since the 1981-82 recession. After tax corporate profits dropped 5.6 percent, energy price declines helped inflation ease to 3.6 percent.
James Holderman former president of the University of Carolina received five years probation after pleading guilty to receiving extra compensation and no contest to tax evasion tied to 25 000 given in 1986 and 1988 through a Columbia law firm. He must perform 500 hours of community service and repay back taxes about 4 000 plus penalties. The plea may require cooperation with a Justice Department probe into U S Senator Hatfield over a 16 3 million grant to the university.
Aiken County Council grapples with a FY1992 budget hole of about 800000 on top of a 900000 deficit. The proposed ordinance include a 2.7 mill debt service tax, 3 percent across the board cuts, and a $249 one time bonus, with final passage tentatively set for June 13. Agencies outside the county umbrella may face larger cuts.
The county projects a tax mill value rise to about 238000 from 224000 and general fund revenues near 20.39 million, with expenditures around 20.94 million. A 2.7 mill increase could generate roughly 644000 for services, while across the board cuts aim to save about 630000 next year. A one time 249 bonus for permanent staff is proposed with limits on part time or seasonal workers and a 166 percent overtime cut. A 500000 reserve fund allocation reduces by about 74000 from FY 91.
Opponents of Savannah River Site nuclear weapons production voiced their strongest challenge at DOE hearings on the draft environmental impact statement. About 85 speakers attended at Coastal Georgia Continuing Education Center, with Savannah and downstream-area residents among the most vocal opponents citing environmental concerns. DOE official Tom Cornwell called many arguments old hat and unfounded.
Gov. Carroll Campbell recovered his 16 year old Labrador Burpee after a late night search. The dog wandered from the mansion likely via a ajar gate and was found at a local Cadillac dealership. Campbell and Iris searched the mansion grounds and nearby areas before the reunion.
