Aiken County Board of Education Budget Hearing and Rezoning

A special meeting tonight at 8 in Room C-2, Aiken High School, 211 Rutland Dr, will cover the 1979-80 operating budget and rezoning of area elementary schools. Nineteen retiring district employees will receive special recognition prior to the budget hearing. the meeting is open to the public.

Graduation ceremonies for public high schools in Aiken County occur Thursday and Friday. The Aiken Standard will publish a special edition honoring the Class of 1979 with class pictures and names from all county high schools including St. Angela Academy.

Dump sites cleaned by bulldozers and truck in Aiken County

Two dumping bin sites at Montmorenci and Fiberglas along U S 78 were cleared of garbage, household goods and brush. BFI official Roger Greene said cleanup to finish by noon though more dumping will follow and blamed individuals more than commercial dumpers. J Trivette, district manager, echoed the need to re educate residents and noted BFI is paid about $20 000 monthly to maintain the bins.

Aiken Budget Proposes Tax Cut Amid City Upgrades

City Manager Roland Windham proposes a three mill cut in ad valorem taxes to ease residents. The plan would reduce city revenue by about 30000 while directing 33000 of a 35300 surplus into a 5700490 budget. Budget growth runs 12.1 percent, sewer fees rise, and wages may gain 5 percent plus 450 across the board.

Horses, Sewers Stir Aiken City Council Meeting

Aiken residents opposed W Ronald Garretts plan to stable two horses at 1108 Clark Road citing odors and neighborhood impact about 20 Wendover Subdivision residents attended. The council granted the request amid protests and heard flooding complaints from Crosland Park.

Eight Airlines Inspect DC-10s After FAA Order

Eight domestic airlines flying DC-10s rushed to inspect engine mounts on 134 jets or ground them by the 3 a.m. EDT deadline. The FAA ordered checks after Friday's Chicago crash that killed at least 273 people, caused by a broken bolt attaching an engine to a wing.

In Chicago experts clash over Flight 191 fate after an engine separated from the DC 10 killing at least 273. FAA head Langhorne Bond says the jet was doomed. NTSB VP Elwood Driver argues loss of the engine alone might not have doomed the plane. Investigators cite data showing attempts to correct the DC 10’s problems before the crash near O’Hare.
