Aiken County lawmen largely back off duty firearm use arguing deterrence and quick response. Public Safety Director Walter Newman notes most officers wear weapons off duty and cites on call status and recent arrests aided by off duty officers.
Cambodian government says Khmer Rouge insurgents pressed a three sided assault on Robah Angkanh seven miles southeast of Phnom Penh. Two outposts evacuated. field reports cite up to 100 soldiers fatally hurt or missing with 12 slipping through. Troops counterattacked near abandoned outposts five to six miles southeast while forces reopen Highway 1 toward Neak Luong.
Former White House counsel John W Dean Ill testified he proposed a pardon condition preventing James R Hoffa from union activities until 1980 in a memorandum to President Nixon before Hoffa received executive clemency and was released from federal prison on December 23 1971. Hoffa later filed a civil suit to lift the ban.
Consoli dated Edison board changed course after April vote and will pay about 11 million dollars in quarterly dividends on 10 issues of preferred stock at 1.25 to 2.075 a share. Preferred dividends must be paid before common stock dividends. No decision on third quarter common dividend until July trustees meeting.
Los Angeles AP Maheu testifies that during 1948 Congressional hearings Hughes room was bugged by a former Washington DC police chief. He also accuses Hughes of alleging in 1972 that Maheu stole him blind in a defamation suit context.
A birthday card from President Nixon reached Mrs. H. A. Woodhead on her 87th birthday, marking a second consecutive year of such greetings. Dale Bumpers, a rising Arkansas figure, defeated J. W. Fulbright by a wide margin to win the Democratic senatorial nomination as Fulbright ends a 30 year Senate career. Bumpers led 65 to 35 percent with 2,626 of 2,786 precincts reporting. Morse leads Oregon bid. Ford in Kentucky secures Democratic nomination.

Tomorrow project rain probability drops to 10 percent with temperatures rising to the upper 80s. Partly cloudy weekend ahead with similar temperatures and a chance of Saturday or Sunday showers.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners failed to hold an executive session after last night's meeting. Commissioner Jo Ann Price had requested a session to discuss the scope of a county audit, but the motion was rescinded with Lt. Murphy as the sole opposing vote. The session attempt followed Price's April 30 demand for line item accounting of expenditures from July 1, 1973, to March 31, 1974, and for printing and binding costs from the administrator's office. The finance committee will study the audit scope, including whether to conduct a special audit or fold Price's request into the annual audit. The board also adopted indigent care payment resolutions for Aiken County Hospital and outside facilities, capping payments at 45 dollars per day per indigent patient, with no paid patient bills. An inventory report, described as the first in the county, was presented by Commissioner Edwin E. Farmer.
