The Aiken Standard publishes a special section titled Aiken County A Great Place To Stay. It surveys life in the county across government industry religion arts Savannah River Site education recreation and public safety.
A South Carolina legislative panel remained divided over property tax relief and keeping the Barnwell radioactive waste landfill open, blocking a new 4.1 billion state budget. Rep. Robert Harrell said they are light years apart and some fear deadlock may endure. The assembly may adjourn Thursday, with a possible extra session if needed. Also, an inmate at Kirkland Correctional Institution was stabbed in his cell, Daniel Davis, 21, in good condition after being treated at Richland Memorial Hospital.

South Carolina may phase out the annual auto inspection law by July 1 under the Fiscal 1996 budget proviso cleared by both House and Senate. Rep. Rudy Mason and Rep. James Roland Smith note the inspection system paid service stations and garages, with the state keeping most of the $3 fee and fines after inflation.
Aiken hosts its first Greekfest on Union Street with Greek dancers and the Nick Trivelas Greek Band entertaining attendees in sizzling 90 degree weather. Visitors sampled lamb sandwiches dolmas baklava and gyros from Demetris Acropolis and other vendors as sponsors including Palmetto Federal and Walmart praised turnout.
Renee Leonard, once a bright 15 year old with dreams of modeling, dropped out of school and moved in with a 17 year old boyfriend. She cut off communication with family as life drifted from plans to independence and possible fame. Please see United, Page 5A.
In Sarajevo a gunbattle erupted between Bosnian Serbs and French peacekeepers as Serbs disguised as UN personnel seized an observation post near the Miljacka bridge. NATO airstrikes followed, with French casualties rising to three dead and ten wounded, while Serb fatalities topped one. France urged stronger UN action to counter Serb aggression.
Judy Fussell, a North Carolina School of the Arts piano student, won the Josef Hofmann Regional Piano Competition earning a $2,000 prize instead of a degree. She plans a year off then a master's at Eastman, with contracts to perform and a recital in Washington.
