Two Players Advance In USC Aiken Piano Contest

The Hofmann Regional Piano Competition at USC Aiken narrows to Judy Fussell and Winnie Zeng for tonight's final round. Fussell, 21, study seeks a master in music at North Carolina School of the Arts, born in Taiwan. Zeng, 25, pursues master's and doctorate at Florida State University, born in Beijing. Other contenders included Robert Halbruner, 21, and Eun Ah Kam, 26, with Halbruner muting and drumming inside the piano during Diemer's Toccatta and Kam impressing with rag tunes and Stravinsky and Bolcom pieces. Zeng receives a $500 prize for Hofmann Berceuse performance and a $300 audience-favorite prize, from the Polish Heritage Association of the Southeast.

Family fun blends music and heritage in Aiken events

A weekend of family entertainment in Aiken County features two festivals. The Etherredge Center Orchestra hosts Greekfest with tickets at the Center box office, 5 dollars, parking near Park Avenue. Beech Island Heritage Day at Redcliffe State Park honors World War II with Sen. Strom Thurmond as grand marshal and a parade from Urquhart Drive to Beech Island Avenue. Admission to both events is free. Greekfest runs noon to 10 pm with food stalls from Acropolis and others. Thurmond appears at about 8:30 pm.
