The 1984 85 city budget heads the council agenda with first readings tonight at 7 30 p m in the Municipal Building second floor conference room. Key actions include tax support for the new budget water and sewer rates and the expenditure of revenue sharing funds. Gaston Road improvement plans also receive council consideration.
Hopeland Gardens hosts the Country Cloggers and Scott Ollis for a public show at 7 p.m. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. parking at Rye Patch. Also notes ongoing hit and run probe near Aiken with victim Robert Tatti, 59, of Detroit. Weather foresees more rain tonight and tomorrow with unsettled skies and possible thunderstorms.
Tommy Knox, chaplain for the Aiken Soil and Water Conservation District and Baptist minister, compared council meetings to Baptist Church gatherings. Rep. Butler Derrick spoke to attendees praising the event while Jim Pearce performed Battle Hymn of the Republic, drawing praise from the crowd.
Energy Secretary Donald Hodel says Savannah River Project will remain viable even if it loses the NPR bid. Ben Rusche has been confirmed as director of the Office of Civilian Nuclear Waste Disposal by unanimous Senate vote. Secretary Hodel noted the job’s high difficulty and importance as he spoke in South Carolina during the V C Summer plant dedication.
Aiken County Council schedules a public hearing at 7 p.m. in the Leavelle McCampbell Middle School gym to discuss police protection for Graniteville Vaucluse Midland Valley and Warrenville. Options include a one year contract with Graniteville Company or a Sheriff's Department takeover with costs from $90,000 annually.
The Rev. M Eugene Mullikin 54 will become senior pastor of St Johns United Methodist Church in Aiken on June 13 succeeding the Rev Robert James who moves to Aldersgate Greenville. Mullikin a former editor and Marine Corps veteran holds degrees from Furman and Duke Divinity and is married with two children.
Aiken County Council schedules a 7 pm hearing on paving needs. District 1 Councilwoman Fay Hatcher urges rural residents to petition for road paving and notes dirt roads cost more to maintain while receiving little paving. She cites nine miles submitted in 1983 with none accepted.
