Witness tackles burglary suspect after break-ins at Southside bar

An Aiken man, Michael Ralph Thornbill, 21, of Brooks Avenue, is charged with eight counts of breaking and entering an auto and second degree burglary after allegedly breaking into a locked room at The Break Room and eight vehicles at nearby AAMCO Transmission. A witness and several men chased and held him in the parking lot until police arrived. Thornbill was treated for injuries and is jailed at the Aiken County detention center.

Southern Bank and Trust donates to USCA faculty endowment

Southern Bank and Trust gave $10,000 to USC Aiken to fund the Faculty Science Endowment Fund. The award supports a School of Business Administration faculty member for research excellence, with remarks from bank and USCA leaders highlighting community impact and ongoing support since the bank opened in 2006.

Burns named principal of Saluda Primary School

Corey Burns will become principal of Saluda Primary School in Saluda County joining Saluda superintendent Dr. David Caterers in July. He previously taught at Aiken Elementary and North Aiken Elementary, later serving as Byrd assistant principal in 2008 and interim principal in 2006. Burns aims to build a strong K to 2 foundation, address Hispanic student needs, and bring energy and innovation to Saluda Primary with about 367 students.

Aiken Woman Arrested After Sears Theft Attempt

An 18 year old Aiken woman was arrested weekend after allegedly taking four DVD players and seven cordless phones from Sears at the Aiken Mall. Store security followed her to the parking lot where she was arrested and booked. Nine women faced trespass notices at Ponderosa. A burglary at Weeks Farm and Garden on Richland Ave exposed a 2006 Dodge Ram worth 26 800 and other items around 10 000 stolen. Fencing at the farm center had been cut and investigators think the truck was driven away. Total theft value about 35 000.
