Early blood tests show promise for Down syndrome screening
Doctors in Maine report a two-blood-test combination could detect about 60 percent of Down syndrome in fetuses between nine and 15 weeks, using pregnancy associated protein A and human chorionic gonadotropin. The method, tested on 4412 women undergoing invasive testing, needs licensing for P A testing and would require ultrasound age dating, raising cost.

An experimental nasal spray flu vaccine called FluMist reduced illness in a NIH funded trial of 1,602 children aged 15 months to 6 years. In the following flu season only 1 percent of vaccinated children contracted influenza versus 18 percent in the control group, and fever with earache was also lower. The results were first reported by The Associated Press from NIH release and funded by NIH and Aviron of Mountain View California which produces the vaccine.

Link Found Between Alzheimer's and Vitamins
Researchers from Oxford and Bergen report Alzheimer's patients show high homocysteine and low folic acid and B12. In 76 patients versus 108 controls, the blood imbalance may be a consequence or clue, suggesting a testable hypothesis for prevention or delay in disease progression.
