The Senate Finance Committee weighing Medicare and Medicaid spending heard a forecast that hospital costs could hit 1000 dollars per day in major cities by 1980. Senator Ribicoff pressed for cost controls while Senator Williams warned on federal solvency as witnesses cited Mark Berke and Dr Philip Lee on the forecast.
Veteran humorist Joe E Brown 77 slept through a robbery at his Brentwood home as three masked men tied and gagged his wife Kathryn 77 and two male nurses. The burglars looted jewelry furs and bonds worth about 100000 including a 40 carat simulated diamond believed real by Mrs Brown.
The National Safety Council estimated 350 to 450 deaths in traffic crashes over the Memorial Day weekend from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. The 54 hour period is the two day observance. The last two day Memorial Day period in 1959 recorded 310 fatalities.
Former President Lyndon Johnson returns to the political stage with a Washington dinner by congressional Democrats to raise funds for the 1970 campaigns. House Speaker John W. McCormack will be guest of honor at the $500 plate event, as Johnson and President Nixon jointly attended a reception honoring McCormack.
New York stocks opened higher with gainers slightly ahead of losers. Big Board prices included Texas Instruments down 1 percent to 83, Texaco up to 2444, and Merck rising to 79 as the Dow Jones average fell 10.20 to 631.16.
President Nixon was given a hard hat inscribed Commander in Chief by 23 construction union leaders at the White House. The gift bearers warned that demonstrations in support of his Southeast Asian policies would continue.
South Carolina counties use long term property tax exemptions to lure new plants. Forty three counties omit most county taxes for five years, with Charlest on and Horry offering twenty five year relief. Some counties bar school levies, others exempt back taxes amid court battles with Bowaters. The practice shifts tax burden away from industry.
Aiken County officials announce the purchase of 10 acres for the new courthouse complex for 115000. The site lies one mile east of the old courthouse with Stacey Street Park Avenue and Richland Avenue boundaries. Construction date not set. Joe Babb of Eulalie Salley and Co. handled the deal.
Arab Israeli fighting intensified on the Egyptian and Jordanian fronts as Israeli patrols entered southern Lebanon for a third day of police action. Lebanon’s Rashid Karami mulled inviting Morocco and Tunisia to send troops while Syria or Egypt aid was weighed. two Israeli soldiers were wounded in the Suez exchange and jets pounded Egyptian positions.
American fighter bombers attacked North Vietnamese anti aircraft positions after a recon plane was fired upon about 90 miles northwest of the Demilitarized Zone. The bombers returned fire in defense of the unarmed aircraft with unknown results and no US losses reported.
Wachovia Bank and Trust Company of Winston Salem was the low bidder for 650000 dollars of bonds issued by the School District of Aiken County. The bid at 6.642459 percent beat the Trust Company of Georgia at 6.8836 percent. Funds will finance the new East Aiken Elementary School on Highway 215 east of Aiken. Bids opened at noon in Treasurer Frank Thomas's office.
Hinto Adams and Daniel Johnson were arrested in a swampy Edisto River area after the Bankers Trust Bank of North robbery in Orangeburg County. About $118,802 was stolen and recovered. Suspects to face U S Commissioner Henry Kirkland in Columbia.
