Senate backers face an uphill fight to gain three more votes to override Reagan's veto of a 1,000 page trade bill. House action came swiftly with a 308 to 113 vote to reverse the veto after Memorial Day leave.
Gov. Carroll Campbell met with White House Chief of Staff Howard Baker and Energy Secretary John Herrington in Washington to urge locating the proposed production reactor at the Savannah River Plant. Campbell described the talks as constructive and cordial and said DOE advisory committees will report by summer with a siting decision to Reagan in July.

Aiken County faced heavy storms yesterday with a Langley policeman James McIntosh losing his home to the winds while the rest of the county reported downed trees and power lines. No injuries were reported. The storm, arriving before 5 p.m., also caused a funnel cloud near Beech Island and power outages in the south side. National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Aiken and Richmond counties from 5 to 6 p.m.
Voters face a county sign blitz ahead of the June 14 primary and the November general election. Aiken and North Augusta enforce strict ordinances on sign placement while poles and rights of way draw mixed official response. SCE&G and Aiken Electric Cooperative say signs on poles are not approved. both remove signs when seen, with no prosecutions to date.
President Reagan departed Washington with Nancy for a four day Moscow summit to press ahead on superpower relations, urge universal human rights, and pursue greater peace and freedom. He stressed differences remain but both leaders share a path toward world liberty and a safer future. He stops in Helsinki for a brief layover before the talks.

A white male in blue jeans and an orange shirt robbed Beech Island Package Shop around 3 p.m. and took a woman and her child hostage, then fled after stopping a car on S.C. 421. The woman and child were unhurt. An 81-year-old North Augusta woman, Gussie Enelow, died at a neighbor’s home, possibly from a heart attack. investigation ongoing.
Aiken County lawmakers rejected the board of education request to raise the school budget millage by 3.4 percent at a Columbia meeting. Sen. Thomas Moore said officials overestimated tax collection, aiming for 97 percent collection while districts assume 93 percent. Rep. Irene Rudnick’s bid for the extra funds failed 7-1. the mill rate was set at 84 mills, unchanged from last year.
