In Angels Camp California Calaveras County officials consider canceling the Jumping Frog Jubilee after a May weekend that drew about 50 000 people. One death 141 injuries and 60 arrests including narcotics cases prompted a 350 signature petition to end the event begun in 1928 as a tourist draw.
Viet Cong marksmen shot down a US helicopter carrying Maj. Gen. Cushman and Maj. Gen. Ngo Quang Truong over the U Minh forest. A third general in a separate helicopter rescued them unhurt. the US pilot and crew were wounded, but the two generals survived.
President Nixon arrives in Mobile and Birmingham Alabama for a nonpolitical swing into Wallace country. He will attend the Tennessee Tom Bigbee Waterway opening with governors of Mississippi Kentucky Tennessee and Florida as construction begins on the 253 mile canal linking the Gulf Coast to the Tombigbee and major river systems at an estimated federal cost of 346 million dollars.
The Senate discussed legislation to bar use of inducted soldiers in Southeast Asian combat as part of the Vietnam War debate. Senator Gaylord Nelson cited Army manpower practice pushing draftees toward combat and noted 14,331 draftees killed in Vietnam through 1970, representing 49 percent of Army combat deaths, with 1970 rising to 57 percent.

A 100-name petition urged removal as citizens cited weekend disturbances and disrespect toward officers. Public Safety Director Busbee described officers as being insulted while handling loud music. Council declared the center a public nuisance and approved the motion.
Sen Strom Thurmond of South Carolina paid off a $5,000 claim against the estate of two elderly Barnwell County twin sisters by agreeing to buy their 160 acre tract near the Allied Gulf nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. The women received no cash but were allowed to remain on the estate until death.
A Rotary gathering in Aiken heard a 23 year marijuana user describe his addiction and context. Sheriff Paul D Grant showed seized cannabis and warned education and treatment are the cure, citing harm and costs to society.
City Manager Roland H. Windham presented a record high proposed budget calling for 1950 710 for municipal services with a 102 mill tax levy unchanged for the fourth year. The plan adds four police officers and one fire equipment operator, raises wages five percent, and outlines utility rate changes with monthly billing to fund operations and capital improvements.
