DOE Freezes Salaries for Most DOE Contractors

COLUMBIA AP A survey of 7th through 12th graders shows 31 percent tried alcohol in the prior month, down from 33 percent in 1989. Beer remains popular with about 24 percent drinking in the last month. Officials note a slight tobacco rise since 1989, with about 20 percent smoking cigarettes in the past month. Drug Sweep Targets New Hope Community

A Friday night crackdown by narcotics agents in New Hope off U S 1 at Graniteville led to multiple arrests. Lt Tim Hoffman said the operation, directed by Sheriff Howard Sellers, followed an undercover January probe and could spread countywide with involvement from Aiken public safety, the Metro Drug Squad, and the RAID team comprising SLED and other agencies. The first arrests included five people, one charged with crack cocaine distribution, others cited for disorderly conduct and related offenses.
