Niekro Keeps Stieb, Blue Jays In Tight Loss Stumble
Phil Niekro earned career win No. 300 as the Cleveland pitcher held Toronto to 4 runs and 10 hits over nine innings. Dave Stieb, seeking win No. 96, struggled to an 0-6 start despite a strong six strikeouts and a 6.33 ERA. George Bell drove in two early for Toronto, but Cleveland answered with runs in the third, fifth and ninth to snap a five-game skid. Mel Hall went 4-for-4 with a double and triple, and Joe Carter drove in Cleveland’s insurance run in the ninth. Boston rallied 8-7 over Minnesota as Jim Rice drew a bases-loaded walk for the decisive run in the ninth. Kansas City topped Texas 6-4 behind George Brett’s two RBI, while Baltimore’s game with California was rained out.
