NBC Today prepared a live show aboard the S S Norway in Charleston Harbor drawing thousands to harborfront views. The ocean liner departed Miami last weekend after stopping in Wilmington and sparked large public interest in the historic port city.

The Commerce Department reports gross national product grew at an annual rate of 3.7 percent in Q1, the strongest since 1985, with inflation at 2.5 percent. The gain followed a 0.7 percent October-December rate, aided by a trade deficit swing and expected 1986 growth around 4 percent.
The EPA acknowledged air radiation in the United States may have been three times higher than initially reported after the Chernobyl accident. The rise reflects unmeasured gaseous iodine compounds, with radiobiologist Neal Nelson noting readings at Montgomery Alabama showed 1.5 to 3.5 times greater concentrations than particle forms.
Oil futures surged to the highest in 14 weeks as demand for gasoline and tight crude supplies boosted the market. June WTI settled at 17.16 a barrel, up 1 from Friday, with unleaded and regular gasoline rising modestly.
A new PSA member urged County Attorney Robert Bell to investigate potential conflicts involving four major PSA customers who also employ board members. The motion, supported by Donald Hartwig, passed by a majority as the board debated representation and origins of appointees.
