Aiken County Council Eyes 85 86 Budget Hike and Overtime Policy
The Aiken County Council will continue discussion of a 13.2 million 1885 86 county budget Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the council building at 736 Richland Ave W in Aiken. A proposed eight mill tax increase would raise the levy to 50.5 mills after three readings and a public hearing. The meeting also covers overtime pay policy under the Fair Labor Standards Act and a resolution approving sewer facility plans for Aiken County and the Aiken and North Area to qualify for EPA grants.

Schofield Middle Student Drowns At Lake Murray
Wallace Michael Redd, a 14 year old eighth grader at Schofield Middle, disappeared while swimming near the Lexington side of Lake Murray. Divers found his body in 20 feet of water near a dock. The incident prompted half mast and grief counseling at the school.

Unionization Vote Set At Mattie C Hall
Workers at Mattie C Hall Health Care Center plan a June 7 vote on unionizing to win better pay benefits and conditions. Organizer Ernie Crawley says about 65 percent of non supervisory staff have signed cards to join the Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees.
