Washington and Moscow announced plans for their first bilateral meeting to be held in Slovenia next month. Officials opened talks on missile defense and nuclear arms cuts, while working groups began deliberations at the State Department after a pledge of constructive relations from the Russian Foreign Minister.
At Andrews Air Force Base near Boston, a 24 member Navy spy plane crew honored for heroism received medals. Their commander in chief personally thanked them in a ceremony during a joint services open house.
Obituary brief. Patricia Calabrese of North Augusta and Ruby Dee Gentry of Greenville Kentucky are listed among death notices. Also noted is Carl Moss Schaumann of Aiken with obituary reference.
A three year drought in South Carolina is likely to stretch into a fourth year as NOAA forecasts below normal rainfall and higher temperatures for June. July and August may bring near normal rainfall, but many farmers face continued drought despite occasional storms. Irrigation remains crucial for those with limited moisture.
The Aiken City Council rejected Bill and Liz Victor 226 Chesterfield Street rezoning request from residential multifamily high density to limited professional by a 2 to 3 vote. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh warned it could trigger a domino effect of downtown residential properties becoming businesses. Councilman Pat Danning supported the bid citing long-ago loss of residential character.
In her memory scholarships honor Kristen Drenton. Kristen would have joined South Airien High School classmates at graduation on June 1. A two-year battle with bone cancer cut her life short during her freshman year at South Aikien in November 1997. Her mother Elaine recalls Kristen planned to attend college and still hoped to donate a memorial fund.
The South Carolina Senate approved a 5.3 billion state budget after a sleepless night for parties. The plan adds 20 million for higher education and 10 million for school accountability. It also includes 3.2 million for teacher incentives in districts rated unsatisfactory.
Local senators Greg Ryberg and Tommy Moore introduced bills to grant administrative autonomy to the Aiken County Board of Education. Each described their measure as a skeletal proposal to place the topic on the table, allowing the board to decide on area advisory councils or area administrative offices and their form.
