The Federal Reserve, having driven rates down more this year than under any Greenspan term, could yet ease further. Analysts expect the next move might signal easing economic risks, suggesting the danger may be diminishing.
Researchers salvage another hull plate from the Confederate submarine Hunley in Charleston. The removal opens access to the crew compartment front where Lt George Dixon, the Hunley’s captain, is believed to lie.
State Sen. Greg Ryberg said assurances keep a prison work release program running, saving local governments hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even if Lower Savannah Center closes, the work would continue using labor from the Trenton prison facility, protecting city budgets in Aiken and North Augusta from large gaps.
Keith Wise, 19, a key witness, gave sharply contrasting testimony as prosecutors argued guilt for co defendants Tonnie Baldwin 23 Contrez Bing 21 and Robert Knight. Wise described the night of Sept 17 1999 when a car was forced off the road and a robbery occurred with alleged sexual assault. Knight faces up to 30 years while Baldwin and Bing threat life terms due to prior crimes. Wise was brought to the Aiken County Judicial Center after being flushed out of a house and may be moved to a different jail amid fears of retaliation.
North Augusta High School student Joshua Jones 15 was ordered confined to Midlands Evaluation Center after a Tuesday hearing. Judge Leslie K. Riddle delayed final punishment while ordering a state evaluation for the juvenile. Prosecutor Serena McDaniel said confinement can last 30 to 45 days with judge discretion.
Supporters of His Way Fellowship accuse council member Jack Smith of defaming church members in a private exchange with Joe Randalls at a Naffle House. They reference a lawsuit tied to opposition of the Local Option Sales Tax approved by voters.
The Aiken Planning Commission voted 4 3 to recommend annexing 529 acres southwest of Woodside into the 800 acre phase three expansion of Woodside Plantation. Opposing were commissioners Bill Reynolds Ed Woltz and Kay Biermann. Residents like Jimmie Tabor raised concerns about the planned 77 acre commercial area near Silver Bluff Road and Richardson's Lake Road.
