Yeltsin survives impeachment vote in Russian Parliament

In Moscow Boris Yeltsin defeated five impeachment motions as Communists faltered. Nearly a quarter of deputies abstained or skipped voting, signaling support for the president. Yeltsin called for work on Russia’s problems and eyed his new prime minister nominee Sergei Stepashin, whose approval was to be considered by the Duma next Wednesday.

Cancer Society relay at Aiken High beats fund-raise goal

Hundreds joined the Relay for Life at Aiken High School from Friday evening to Saturday morning and surpassed the fundraising goal, raising $122,325 by 7 am, well above last year’s $83,000 and this year’s $90,000 target. Organizers led by Sandra West and Bob Queen noted strong team growth to over 40 from six and cited personal cancer connections among participants.

Star Party At USC Aiken Draws Skywatchers

Roger Venable led a Spring Star Party at USC Aiken as Venus appeared after sunset. The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center hosted lectures and a Dupont Planetarium show while families used binoculars and telescopes to spot planets and galaxies. Planetarium director Gary Senn noted two annual events attracting about 200 people on clear nights. Venable, president of the Astronomy Club of Augusta, shared a lifelong passion for astronomy and the beauty of the skies.

Interstate 70 mph signs go up in South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Transportation moves to post 70 mph speed limit signs on designated interstate segments across the state. Commission chairman Morgan Martin says the changes will be posted quickly and completed by June 1. Most interstates already affected.
