Washington AP reports Construction of houses and apartments jumped 6.2 percent in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 957,000, the second advance in three months. Analysts note prior declines from January through March and point to permit trends as a gauge of future activity.

Sheriff's deputies stormed a public bus after a three hour standoff and killed the hijacker. A wounded rider died on the street before rescue crews arrived. The incident began late Wednesday night at Santa Monica Boulevard and Doheny Drive as officers urged the suspect to surrender.
Two persons died and three were injured in a two car head on crash on Whiskey Road Wednesday afternoon near Lowe s and the Aiken Mall. The Ford Thunderbird traveling north swerved to avoid a side street entry and crossed three lanes to strike a southbound Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Lester Calvin Newman 21 of Hill Street Clearwater was dead at the scene along with George F Delach 33 of Evans Ga who was a passenger in the Thunderbird. Debilitating injuries left Kamey Ann Crawford 18 North Augusta in critical condition after surgery. Brian Robert Hess 30 of Martinez was listed in critical condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. The Thunderbird was driven by David Hoezee 26 of Augusta. The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Secretary of State Baker ends his latest Mideast trip without agreement on a conference formula. He cites two sticking points Israels acceptance of a UN role and reconvening talks after a deadlock, following a three and a half hour meeting with Prime Minister Shamir. The six day mission covered Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Israel as Baker pursues a peace conference.
Video tapes show Mayor Rollo absent during his son's contract approval while the council hired Leon Rollo for town hall renovations. He faced ethics charges, a criminal indictment for misusing office, and was suspended by the governor. Rollo trailed in a runoff against P. K. Greene as the case drew scrutiny from the ethics commission and local council members.
U S Rep Butler Derrick reported 26800 in speaking fees last year while Rep Robin Tallon earned 19500 for 15 speeches. Tallon, on the Agriculture Committee, received 2000 1000 or 750 per engagement from Tobacco Institute American Peanut Producers and Philip Morris Inc and traveled to Santiago Chile and Palm Springs California on expense paid trips. Derrick spoke in New York Chicago Kansas City and Washington with travel lodging and meals reimbursed by Connell Rice and Sugar Co New York Stock Exchange Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Waste Management Inc with some expenses for his wife covered on three occasions.
The Legislature approved a bill to cut solid waste sent to landfills by 30 percent in six years, with a 25 percent recycling target, and a cap that leaves room for yard debris. Gov. Carroll Campbell has endorsed the measure, and sponsor Harris-Beaufort hope counties engage quickly to demonstrate progress.
