Ronald B Bolton, who helped draft Aiken's interim landscape ordinance, faced the first setback as the City Planning Commission split 4 to 1 against his proposal for a Hi day Inn Express at Colony Parkway and Whiskey Road. Commissioner Rudy Mason voted against the motion after Bolton sought to cut 126 of 161 trees eight inches in diameter on the Woodward Tract site, drawing opposition from residents Rosamond McDuffie and Lucy Knowles who warned the project would strain a fragile area. Bolton admitted the project would not be feasible as a three story building and noted financing depended on the plan. He said he had exceeded the landscape ordinance requirements.
