Chime Bell leads National Marching Moms in a protest march advocating a handgun ban. Organizers call for stricter gun control while supporters rally for safety and community protection in a stateside demonstration.
Hopelands Gardens Summer Concert Series doubles this week with the Edisto Singers performing the first course today and the South Aiken High School Band serving up dessert Tuesday. The Edisto Singers, a 35‑member Wagener community choir directed by Harry Kirkland, will perform songs by Berlin Rogers and Hammerstein and popular tunes from the 50s to 70s.
United Way of Aiken County awards $5,000 to The Margaret J Weston Medical Center to start a preventive infant dental health program and $5,000 to Reach Out and Read to fund an additional ROAR site in Aiken County. Officials emphasize improving child health and literacy through early dental care and reading resources.
The Bath Fire Department will move to a four acre plot from the former Bath Elementary School site. Chief David Cunningham praises the school board for donating land. The building will include four pull through bays, meeting rooms, showers, sleeping area and a water bill office. Volunteers hope to secure a loan by June for construction, citing the current location’s outgrown status and tight maneuvering in a residential area. The department, rated four by a national organization, has 41 volunteers including 30 firefighters, five cadets and six first responders.
Graniteville resident Katie Snell named one of three May artists of the month by the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro. Snell designs hand crafted porcelain jewelry since 1989, with each piece undergoing four to five firings and 16 handling steps over one to two weeks. Her bright colors and varied designs distinguish her work, which she now pursues full time alongside family life. Snell’s porcelain pieces will be displayed in the Center’s education room throughout May.
Four callers reported a brush fire behind Aiken Overhead Door on Walnut Lane near I-20. Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters contained about a quarter acre of flames in windy, 30 mph conditions. NADPS noted the burn originated from a trash pile and questioned future action.
Two Aiken High School graduates Matthew and Philip Roehrs, brothers now at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, pursue medical certification. Matthew, 27, graduated in 1990 and is now Dr. Matthew Roehrs. Philip, 24, class of 1994, continues toward medicine with two years remaining.
