Britain’s rail network slowly restarted today following a weekend shutdown. Management spokesmen expect normal schedules within a day or two after 300,000 workers backed demands for higher pay by resuming a nationwide slowdown starting last Friday.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers urged Congress to approve the administration's 3.56 billion dollar foreign aid request for FY 1973. He testified before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that the funds would foster a more constructive relationship with adversaries and spur allies to take greater responsibility.
New York stock prices opened higher continuing Friday gains. Advances outpaced declines on the New York Exchange by more than two to one.

Paramed officials announce John D. Surles of Savannah named manager of Aiken County Ambulance Service. Surles has long EMS background from Durham Ambulance and Paramedical Services of South Carolina. He led EMT training programs, worked with physicians and hospitals, and completed intensive courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and neonate transfer mortality studies.
Bill Beasley says the peaches look good with a likely strong crop after late freezes pruned trees. Local peaches are on schedule and May peaches should come soon. Clemson’s Information Filter Center notes Piedmont peaches are about two weeks behind but expected to reach a full crop.
City of Aiken Police say a car fire at Rose's Department Store followed a late night anonymous threat. Investigators determined a loose gas line caused the blaze, with no tampering suspected, as officers assisted employees and continued the probe for the caller. Weekend traffic arrests totaled 33 with multiple crashes and DUI charges.

Sen. Strom Thurmond told South Carolina doctors in Myrtle Beach that no national health insurance proposal will pass the 92nd Congress but warned that a version may return in the next session. He spoke to the South Carolina Medical Association during its annual convention briefing on pending health care bills and noted three pieces of national health insurance medical review proposals and Health Maintenance.
South Vietnamese forces retook Fire Base Bastogne 12 miles west of Hue after hours of fierce fighting and air strikes. The counterattack on Bastogne and Checkmate aimed to widen Hue defenses as North Vietnamese probes intensified in Kontum and Pleiku, with siege actions at An Loc and the Saigon region ongoing.
