President renews pledge to combat gun violence
President Bush renews his pledge to curb gun violence while visiting Philadelphia on Monday. He urges vigorous enforcement of gun laws and a focus on keeping juveniles from obtaining firearms. A gun control group aired ads calling for mandatory background checks at gun shows, citing loopholes as a crime risk. The group Americans for Gun Safety, founded by Andrew McKelvey, endorses stronger laws and enforcement to keep guns from criminals and youths. Senator Reed and Senators McCain and Lieberman push waiting periods or similar limits on gun show purchases. Bush notes his 2002 budget would fund programs to boost arrests and prosecutions of gun offenders.
