A Senate committee rejected sweeping restructuring, keeping many boards intact and delaying Cabinet style reform. Lawmakers say public support is weak and changes should be gradual, while Gov Campbell expresses disappointment and may push a special session to urge action.
Edgefield entrepreneur Bettis Rainsford addressed about 300 USC Aiken graduates at the Stu dent Activities Center urging wealth comes from serving a purpose greater than self. He received an honorary doctorate as USC President John Palms presided. Rainsford urged perseverance and warned against letting race or sex set limits on success.
UNC coach Dean Smith proposes a stark public education approach by banning alcohol ads or, at least, ending them with graphic warnings. IRS agents seized the residence of Eddie G. and Bridget A. Sherlock in Murphy Village North Augusta for unpaid personal income taxes from 1987 to 1981 totaling $26,189. The home will be auctioned at 10 a.m. June 30 at Edgefield County courthouse as part of a broader investigation of area taxpayers.
Construction of two new elementary schools in Aiken County aims for the 1994-95 start, under the five year Facilities Improvement Plan. Chukker Creek Elementary on Chukker Creek Road will serve 600, costing about 5.4 million dollars. Warrenville Elementary near Howlandville and Log roads will serve 500 with about 4.4 million dollars. The old Warrenville site will be returned to Granitville Company. School lines will be drawn by computer during 1998-94, potentially shifting enrollments. Chukker Creek was designed by Wells Law & Associates. Browning Construction of Irmo won the bid. The center building will house shared facilities and specialized spaces. two wings will be added.
Construction under way or planned in the Aiken County School District as part of the five year Facilities Improvement Plan. Projects include 3.5 million in additions to Aiken School Area 1 and an 8.6 million new middle school on Wire Road behind Crosland Park.
