James Patterson, 68, of New Holland Road in Aiken, died when his 15 foot fishing boat capsized north of Greenwood State Park on Lake Greenwood. His companion, Hasting Johnson, 83, survived after CPR failed to revive Patterson. Johnson was treated as a precaution. DNA investigates.
The Lower Savannah Council of Governments will receive about 75 million dollars from a tobacco settlement to finance water and sewer upgrades and tech friendly infrastructure. Local governments in Aiken Allendale Calhoun Bamberg Barnwell and Orangeburg counties have until May 30 to apply. The funds will be distributed over 25 years and stem from a 23 billion settlement with tobacco companies.
At Hagood Stadium Friday night participants lined the track for Aiken’s Relay for Life including Faye Barron two year survivor and Survivors Walk coordinator leading the first lap with her daughters and grandchildren. Four year old Ryan Uhle led the second lap as honorary chairperson and rest of the event drew 400 to 500 team members. Co chair Mark Gustafson said turnout was wonderful and the goal is 160000 this year surpassing last year’s 157000.
