SRS projects funded under new budget plan

Washington a fractured Congress approved a final budget for next year that promises deep tax cuts and bridged spending awarding a victory to President Bush though there were signs the road to achieving those goals may be bumpy. Included in the budget was additional funding for cleanup at sites that produced nuclear is during the Cold War. The initial Bush budget would have resulted in a cut in the budget at the Savannah River Site of over 156 million. Sen Strom Thurmond and Rep Lindsey Graham have fought to restore funding for SRS programs. With centrist Democrats providing pivotal support, the Senate cleared a 91.90 million budget on a near party line vote. Defections by Republican Sens James Jeffords and Lincoln Chafee were outweighed by five Democrats who backed the GOP plan.
