April wholesale prices slide as energy falls

Washington reports a 0.3 percent April drop in the Producer Price Index driven by a 4.1 percent fall in energy costs. Core wholesale inflation rose 0.1 percent, while energy and food swings offset each other. The Fed has raised rates five times this year and analysts anticipate another hike, possibly half a point.

Youth Red Cross crew marks third birthday in Aiken County

The Aiken County chapter of the American Red Cross celebrates three years of youth service with 28 teens logging about 2,800 hours. Volunteers, led by Janice Moore, assist Cumbee Center to Aid Abused Persons ACTS Caring Clinic and local nursing homes while supporting Hurricane Floyd evacuees. Compensation hearings okayed by House panel

Rep Lindsey Graham said House members led by Rep Floyd Spence will hold hearings on compensation for nuclear workers with job related medical conditions. The Armed Services Committee approved the Defense Authorization Act 56 to 1, funding over 70 million dollars for Savannah River Site projects including tritium production design. Department of Energy contract workers have long complained of radiation exposure and toxic substances at nuclear plants. Spence is joined by Reps Duncan Hunter Mac Thornberry and Jim Gibbons in supporting the effort.

Congressional hearing pledge on nuclear and medical issues

A hearing pledge on nuclear and medical topics accompanies a defense bill. SRS projects gain a net $40 million above the administration request for cleanup programs at the nuclear facility. Allocation includes $16 million for the 94-1 cleanup program and $24 million for infrastructure, with $8 million for replacing the Defense Waste Processing Facility computer control system.
