WGSG plan advances new Westinghouse building in Aiken

The Aiken Corporation Executive Committee endorsed MOUs with the City of Aiken and Westinghouse to authorize signing of documents for a WGSG headquarters on land leased from the city. The city will own the land and the Aiken Community Playhouse side of the building. WGSG will lease from the corporation. The panel also weighing incentives to attract vacant commercial properties and possible city tax breaks as incentives.

Aiken lawmaker criticizes flag vote outcome at Capitol

Health of South Carolinians details infant mortality trends

The state report The Health of South Carolinians 2000 notes mixed outcomes for children in South Carolina. Infant mortality rose in 1997 and 1998 to 9.5 per 1000 live births, with 494 and 511 infant deaths. Neonatal mortality held at 6.7, while postneonatal deaths rose slightly to 2.8 per 1000.

Horse trainer Buddy Raines dies at 89 in Aiken

Buddy Raines a longtime horseman with more than 70 years in the industry died Wednesday at Pepper Hill Nursing Center in Aiken at age 89. Fellow trainers mourn his generosity and knowledge with tributes from Mack Miller and Ron Stevens. Funeral services set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist.
