A San Francisco Bay area port city of about 14 000 residents asks the Navy to turn over the 45 000 ton battleship Missouri to establish it as a national monument in Martinez California. The ship featured the 1945 signing of the Japan World War II peace treaty and is currently mothballed at Bremerton Washington.
The House Post Office Committee approved a postal reform package that includes an eight percent retroactive pay raise to April 16 for striking workers. The measure aims to prevent new walkouts amid Senate opposition and expected weeks of Congressional delay before final approval.
A Defense Department spokesman warned that weekly casualty lists will likely show more American deaths due to Cambodian and South Vietnamese actions. He did not cite figures but suggested the total would exceed 123 KIA the prior week, with a clash at a South Vietnamese base adding 29 American deaths.
Vice President Spiro Agnew accuses television of shaping youths toward confrontation. In TV Guide he says young people are conditioned to action by seeing on screen violence and demonstrations rather than engaging with books. He questions whether cameras prompt illegal demonstrations and urges broader industry responsibility.
The market began the day with declines on the New York Stock Exchange as losers edged ahead of gainers. Bristol-Myers fell 1 percent to 49.2, DuPont down 0.5 to 109, Disney down 1 to 117.2, Cudahy down 0.5 to 11.5, while Jewel Companies rose 2 to 39.42. the Dow fell 7.66 to 710.07 on the session's low turnover.
The $162 500 estate of actress Inger Stevens remains unsettled as a Superior Court weighs a claim by Isaac L. Jones that he married the blonde star in 1961 in Tijuana. Stevens died April 30 from a barbiturate overdose, in Hollywood Hills. Public Administrator Baldo Kristovich contests the marriage claim citing lack of evidence.
The Senate passed a measure to require hazardous household substances to be sold in child resistant containers. The bill allows the secretary of health, education and welfare to decide which substances need special packaging and sends the proposal to the House for action.
At the University of South Carolina Gov. McNair declares a state of emergency for the 15 000 student campus and imposes an 11 pm curfew. Troopers and National Guardsmen used tear gas and nightsticks to clear crowds of 1000 to 3000 protesters who had ransacked the Administration Building. President Thomas F. Jones and trustees assure normal classes with protection for all.
State troopers and SLED agents blocked access to the Administration Building during a volatile campus dispute. A dean warned that the National Guard would arrive in 15 minutes as 3,000 bystanders watched unrest escalate with bricks and bottles hurled at guards.
A nighttime tornado with hurricane velocity winds hit Lubbock Texas killing 23 people and injuring hundreds. The eight mile path caused millions in damage mainly in downtown area as looting reported and Red Cross officials sought rescue and relief.
An outbreak of racial violence in Augusta Georgia after a teen jail inmate's beating death left six dead and more than 60 injured. Firemen backed by National Guardsmen and state troopers fought 50 fires as Gov. Maddox sent in guardsmen and troopers to seal off a 130 block Negro area with curfew and searches.
American and South Vietnamese boats patrol a 100 mile Cambodian coast to choke enemy supply lines. The 7th Fleet adds a third aircraft carrier off Tonkin to boost air power. Ky says a blockade begun Saturday covers coast from the South Vietnamese border to Sihanoukville. Takeo recaptured with Viet Cong raids continuing along the south coast. President Nixon aims for all U.S. troops out of Cambodia by June.
New York based utilities announce Indiana Michigan Electric will use the Allied Gulf nuclear fuel recovery plant at Barnwell South Carolina for Donald C. Cook plant units near St Joseph Michigan. The deal supports over 75 million in letters of intent from several energy and engineering firms.
Authorities offered no speculation on whether police or a sniper caused the five deaths, all Black men. Augusta hospitals treated over 63 people with gunshot wounds, cuts, and bruises after a peaceful march ended at the city hall when a group tore down and burned a Georgia flag.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Department kept all units deployed in the North Augusta area through the night amid violence across the river. A car from Augusta carrying stolen groceries was stopped after crossing the Fifth Street Bridge. its occupants were arrested and charged. Charges against two other men and a woman were pending.
Aiken County stockade inmate David Lewis received a two year sentence for assault of a high and aggravated nature after pleading nolo contendere. Lewis, a Lexington County native serving a manslaughter term, had been allowed family visits when the incident occurred. The two year term runs concurrently with his current sentence.
