Three major networks announce President Nixon will hold a news conference carried live on radio and television starting at 10 p.m. EDT. Spokesmen for ABC CBS and NBC issued the notice in New York.
Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces shelled South Vietnam’s northern provinces with rockets and mortars in a new high point of attacks. South Vietnamese units faced heavy fighting in Cambodia with 50 killed and 200 wounded, while Saigon claimed 234 VC killed and 106 captured. Da Nang Hoi An and Tam Ky hit hardest.
Arab guerrillas in Lebanon fired on Israeli troops north of Metulla wounding four soldiers. Dayan warned of cross border activity after a rocket attack killed a man and his daughter in Kiryat Shomna. Israeli forces have previously responded with air strikes and commando raids.
Charleston West Virginia police chief Dallas Bias says officers must risk their lives to rescue and defend the flag from tear up or burning in their presence. He expects officers to shoot if their life is in danger during the rescue. Mayor Elmer Dodson plans to review the instructions. Bias began a Vietnam Moratorium era campaign for flag patches on police and fire uniforms. Kansas Valley officers have worn them.
Eight housewives plan a quiet candlelight vigil on Mother's Day to protest killings from Indochina to campuses. They emphasize a peaceful protest not aimed at officials or students, saying killing human beings is wrong after Kent State tragedy.

The Aiken County Delegation authorized the Higher Education Commission to buy 100 acres from Graniteville Co for a new USC Aiken campus and approved $80,000 for the site northwest of Aiken between Trolley Line Road and U.S. Highway. Members supported the Graniteville site over other options after debate on location and funding.
The Johnston plant of Riegel Textile's Consumer Products Division earned Sears top supplier honors for quality manufacturing. Frank J. Sullivan joined the ceremony with praise for the Johnston team and Ware Shoals division materials. The event honored multiple Johnston and Ware Shoals staff, with local officials and Sears leaders in attendance.
