Admiral Zumwalt said mine fields are now active off Haiphong in North Vietnam and defended the action as self defense. He noted 36 ships were inside the harbor and many left after a three day grace period. One of 16 Russian vessels remained in Haiphong.
Moscow officials denounce President Nixon's order to mine the entrances to all North Vietnamese ports as a threat to international peace and security. Tass distribution stops short of urging postponement of the Nixon Brezhnev summit opening May 22 in Moscow.
Rescue teams at the Sunshine silver mine near Kellogg Idaho recovered 11 additional bodies nine days after a devastating fire. The death toll reached 58 with four found at 3,400 feet and seven at 3,700 feet as crews battle smoke and communication gaps. Mine manager Marvin Chase suggested the seven were attempting to escape smoke when overcome.
In Washington the House is poised to approve a $2 minimum wage bill. Two proposals seek to lift the current $1.60 rate. only one adds new worker coverage. A tight vote is anticipated as members choose between the measures.

CAP units in South and North Carolina launched a hunt for a private plane thought down in the mountains of the Carolinas. The two Augusta men aboard hadn't responded since Tuesday after reporting a position near Spartanburg Greenville Airport at 2 p.m. local time.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts partly cloudy skies with a low in the lower 50s and a high in the mid 70s. Rain probability today is near zero, about 10 percent tomorrow, with east winds 10 to 15 mph easing tonight and increasing from the southeast tomorrow.
Sta thy J. Verenes of Aiken charged North Augusta with apathy toward past industrial opportunities and urged a reaccess of efforts.
