Four state psychiatrists were ordered to reexamine Otis Cummings Jr. for a detailed mental competency assessment in the Jan. 15 rape case. Judge Julius B. Ness ordered the review after finding the prior testimony insufficient. Cummings is charged with multiple counts including rape and assault.
The U S Department of Agriculture forecasts a 250 million pound table peach crop for South Carolina, yielding about 48 million bushels and potentially $17 million for orchardists. A bumper state crop could reach seven or eight million bushels, possibly $22 million, despite frost damage. South Carolina would remain the nation’s top producer of table peaches and lead in peach canning. Georgia trails with an estimated 155 million pounds.
Former Army chief of police Maj. Gen. Carl C. Turner received a three year prison term after soliciting 136 firearms from the Chicago Police Department for his own use. He faced up to five years and a $5,000 fine. a June 7 trial on four income tax evasion charges remains. Judge Oren L. Lewis urged honesty from those in power and noted Turner's former rank influenced his decision.
Saigon forces halted an eastern Cambodia push, destroying two armored regiments and halting three North Vietnamese Viet Cong divisions. U.S. advisers say the operation kept Viet Cong forces from crossing into 11 provinces around Saigon, concentrating on blocking infiltration along Highway 7.
The Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen announces 13 000 members could strike next week if talks fail. President C J Chamberlain says a 6 am local strike is ordered for next Monday, halting all rail service including Amtrak and commuter lines. A Labor Department meeting with the union and NLRB was set for today.
South Carolina officials will meet in Washington to seek ways to keep open Avco Lycoming’s Charleston plant with 2,000 workers. Senator Strom Thurmond said the company will close next year due to lack of business. the plant opened four years ago and once employed 3,600. Current contracts are to be completed.

Gov. John C. West affirmed that South Carolina will continue soliciting nuclear facilities and praised a House committee to study the Barnwell County nuclear fuel recovery plant project. He warned against another BASF controversy and noted the state’s growing role with Savannah River and Allied Gulf proposals.
City Council extended the downtown free parking program for the third time to July 1 to attract shoppers to Aiken stores. The move suspends parking meter enforcement despite an estimated $26 000 yearly revenue loss, while chamber president Wade Brodie urged an indefinite suspension. Mayor Weeks noted complaints about scarce spaces near the library and post office.
Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell praised Washington police for halting a May Day protest surge that led to 12,000 arrests over four days. He contrasted protesters with Nazi imagery, calling police actions vital to protecting civil rights and criticizing senators who likened police to Brownshirts.
