In Vietnam on Buddha's birthday a Buddhist nun and a 27 year old monk burned themselves to death in appeals for peace. The nun died at a pagoda in Cam Lo near the DMZ and the monk in Hue after leaving letters to President Nixon and President Thieu requesting peace and withdrawal of U.S. troops. Both belonged to the military An Quang Buddhist sect.
State police spent hours clearing U.S. 11 near Camp Hill after 3.68 million nickels spilled from a tractor trailer carrying 40 000 pounds of coins. Driver Pat Martin of Harrisburg said the load shifted causing the spill en route from Columbus to Lancaster. Troopers recovered all coins worth five cents each and the truck carried 184 000 dollars in new nickels from Denver Mint.
Op Center Alabama's first black sheriff since Reconstruction, Lucius Amerson, and his Macon County chief deputy Richard Coleman Jr., go on trial in a federal civil rights case alleging they beat a man. The victim, Wilbert Dean Harris, faces four counts of assault with intent to murder linked to a jail shootout in Tuskegee.

Preliminary two month findings show men affected twice as often as women, with interpersonal relations and self-confidence issues cited as chief problems.

Decatur police dealt with a busy Mothers Day as they received ten early morning calls from an apparently drunk man seeking his mother. Officers aided lost children in ten parks and supermarkets and a large billboard reading Happy Mothers Day collapsed at a busy intersection, snarling traffic.
The USPS plans a May 16 rate boost pending Rate Commission findings. Postcard cost goes to six cents, letters to eight, air mail to 11, with second and third class and some fourth class rates rising from 10 to 20 percent. Special delivery and registered mail also increase.
The trial of James Lewis Counts of Aiken began in Aiken County General Sessions Court on an assault charge against a police officer. Indicted over an alleged attack after a traffic stop, companion Harry Lee Williams was shot and killed in the ensuing scuffle. Lt. Roger Martin faced homicide charges and was later found innocent.
Jackson voters head to the polls to elect a mayor six council members and a public works commissioner. Incumbents J M Brown and James K Ellis Jr lead the ballot with several other names. write-ins include A Earlie Helms James Copeland and John Mills. A rally is scheduled at Jackson Elementary School.
The Aiken County grand jury calls immediate funding for more personnel and a drug abuse education program for the sheriff’s department. It also pushes relocating the Food Stamp Office, tightening Stockade security, and funding two narcotics officers, one process server, two vehicles, and overtime.
Two out of state men were sentenced to 21 and 15 years after an Aiken County jury convicted them of armed robbery of a local grocery. Testimony cited the Black Panther Party amid strict court security with multiple law enforcement agencies on site.
U S forces in Vietnam fall to 184000 by December under Nixon troop cutbacks. An Americal Division battalion south of Da Nang is withdrawn for deactivation, and the 2215 man Marine logistic command at Da Nang is deactivated. The Americal brigade has faced tough duties in Quang Ngai and Quang Tin provinces.

Aiken County risks losing all federal funds for water systems sewers schools roads and pollution controls by October 1 unless a county wide plan for orderly development is created. Aiken and North Augusta planners reported at a Friday meeting of local planning commissions attended by 70 leaders and grand jury members. W T McKie urged action noting two multi million dollar North Augusta Belvedere projects stall due to lack of a unified plan.
City police probe a Friday night break in at the Fermata Club where vandals damaged about 70 light bulbs and dumped trash into the pool, costing an estimated 150 to repair. Lybrands Service Station on Park Ave SW was entered, 175 worth of merchandise stolen after breaking five rear window panes. Marshall W Bartley’s service station on Park Ave SE was hit Saturday night with 2 cases of beer, half a case of motor oil, and candy reported missing.
