A tractor trailer carrying 42 55-gallon steel clad barrels of low grade radioactive waste departs the Savannah River Site at noon for isolation in Carlsbad New Mexico. The material including clothing and debris will be sealed on an above ground pad and prepared for transfer to the Department of Energy waste isolation pilot plant, with crew trained in transfer procedures.

Miller, 91, of Harlem, Georgia, died later at Medical College of Georgia after a similar single vehicle crash on Interstate 20 near mile marker 11. Both incidents are under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
City Manager Roger LeDuc unveiled a preliminary 31.4 million dollar budget for 2001-2002 at a City Council work session. The plan shows a 0.8 percent funding rise from this year and a 4.65 percent rise over two years, with no tax increase despite additions of two full time and three part time staff and a two percent wage adjustment.
