Pope John Paul II made a peace prayer in Quneitra amid ruined walls from conflict with Israel. The visit to the Greek Orthodox church symbolized reconciliation as part of a four day Syrian journey aimed at reaching both Muslims and Christians.
Dennis Tito ends the first paid space vacation with a fiery but safe descent to Earth. The 60 year old Californian businessman and two Russian crewmates landed in Central Asia after eight days in space and a stay aboard the international space station. Tito called the flight perfect and paradise.
Sylvia A. Sanders of Blackville Mary Alice D. Snipes of Aiken and Bernice R. Wilson of North Augusta are named in obituary notices on page 5A detailing their passing and funeral arrangements.
In Aiken three Confederate flags were raised at the Confederate Monument in front of the county courthouse during a ceremony by Sons of Confederate Veterans and Confederate Veterans groups. A wreath was placed to honor Confederate soldiers. Activities continue in Columbia as Confederate Memorial Day is observed.
An RC-135 reconnaissance plane from Kadena Air Base flew a routine track along the northern coast of China. The unarmed U S aircraft conducted the mission off China's coast and drew no response from Beijing, marking the first such flight since the April 1 clash.
Columbia reports a drop in traffic deaths in the first four months of the year from 346 in 2000 to 292 this year. Officials credit stricter law enforcement and a public beltuse campaign. Gov Hodges pushes highway safety with plans for a curfew on teen drivers and more troopers, though a gas tax hike faces opposition.
State agencies, corporations and interest groups in South Carolina set a record by spending $11.5 million on lobbyists last year. SCANA led with $267,677 from shareholder money, the highest among organizations. 460 groups hired 300 lobbyists. Publicly funded bodies, including the State Ports Authority with $212,934, ranked among top spenders, as 37 agencies filed reports with the State Ethics Commission.
Nick Green a 15 year old college senior at University of South Carolina Aiken graduates in spring 2001 with a history major and 20th century focus. He plans to pursue a master’s in public history at Columbia. Green, praised by director Ahmed Samaha, stayed in the CSRA after moves from Bakersfield and Douglasville, juggling reviews and all night study with selfies in 35mm photography and baseball on TV.
