Aiken plan would widen University Parkway with new lanes

Aiken officials plan major University Parkway upgrades over several years to ease traffic near USC Aiken and Aiken Regional Medical Centers. The project envisions a five lane section from Richland Avenue to Physicians Drive, then a divided four lane to Medical Park Drive, and divided three lanes to Robert M Bell Parkway with bike lanes and new sidewalks. A stoplight at Trolley Run Station entrance would be replaced by a straight-through road, and a left-hand road near Trolley Run would be removed for green space owned largely by USCA. Funding totals 10.6 million with 4.6 million state support and 6 million local funding.
