Arthur Fiedler, 81, says he feels better when working and has no thought of retirement. He notes he would go nuts doing nothing and has posted a sign reading He who rests rats. He continues to conduct the Boston Pops full time after a pneumonia illness last winter.
Syvella Dummar says she has received several marriage proposals since Melvin was named an heir in Howard Hughes estate. She declines them all until the man she loves asks, noting the potential riches do little for her. Dummar, 25, works for a security guard firm near Las Vegas and would receive one sixteenth of the estate if the will is genuine, with an estimated value of 100 to 150 million dollars before taxes.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat rushed to Damascus in an 11th hour bid to avert a clash between Syria’s Hafez Assad and Kamal Jumblatt. Jumblatt accused Syria of escalating pressure to back Elias Sarkis, governor of the state bank, for Lebanon’s presidency.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors accepted a proposal to form an 11 member labor and city panel to resolve the 38 day craft workers strike that has idled about 1900 city workers and halted transit service. If both sides agree it would mean an immediate return to work, said Board President Quentin Kopp.
At 1 35 a m Melva Wright a 29 year old black woman in La Mirada woke to an orange glow at her window as a cross burned on her lawn. The attack is part of a wave of racial incidents alarming authorities and residents of integrated neighborhoods.
Barbara Ligon of Warrenville performed in the Aiken County Courthouse while Judge Rodney A. Peeples invited her to entertain the petit jury during lunch. Meanwhile 16 year old Stephan Holmes made a hole in one at Houndslake using an old ball, while courtroom attention paused for a lunch with the judge.
Letters from Rawicz Poland ask for brochure information from an Aiken South Carolina firm. Aiken officials, unsure of the meaning, learn students are doing a school project. Polish embassy confirms a program where students contact American companies. Stamps in the letters total about 5.30 dollars.
Aiken County Sheriff Paul D. Grant announced an inquiry into Deputy Ed West for attempting to handcuff a defendant in view of the jury during General Sessions Court. Judge Rodney A. Peeples reprimanded West for the act and cited a prior speeding incident in which West damaged his patrol car.
Eagle Aviation spokesman Charles Harman says a white Piper J-3 two seater piloted by Ben Hatcher of New Ellenton took off about 5 p.m. yesterday and did not return. FAA and Civil Air Patrol alerted. plane had two hours of fuel.
The U S unemployment rate held at 7.5 percent in April after five months of decline as employment rose by 700000 to a record 87.4 million. Labor force expanded to 94.4 million with about 700000 more job seekers, while total unemployed hovered near 7 million.
The Kiwanis Club hosts its annual tricycle race in downtown Aiken at 3 30 p m with Mayor H Odell Weeks as grand marshal Trooper Terry will attend. The event supports Kiwanis scholarship fund and community services. Rain date is May 19.
Mrs. John Q. Public attended a May 25 question and answer session on the Aiken Technical Education Center bond referendum of 1.7 million dollars. Will Owings of Belvedere was the only other attendee besides eight TEC staff, two reporters, and Ken Perry who spoke about the need for expansion.
Otto Sampson Jr. 22 changed his plea to common-law robbery for the March Angelos Package Shop holdup and received seven years. Judge Peeples urged vocational training and medical care. Sampson claimed police coerced a confession. A second guilty plea, Samuel Battle, led to four years suspended after 16 months plus five years probation. Reed’s medical costs split. court adjourned to Monday.
Rain is predicted for the Aikee area through tomorrow morning with an 80 percent chance of showers today and 70 percent tonight. Clouds ease tomorrow afternoon and Sunday looks clear with mild highs in the mid 70s to around 80.
