The first Hopeland Gardens concert begins tonight at 7 featuring a 12 piece Fort Jackson based 282nd U.S. Rock Combo Ambush. The Ai ken Recreation Department sponsors the free event at Hopeland Gardens Dupree Place off Whiskey Road with parking at Rye Patch on Berrie Road. If rain, the show moves to South Aiken High.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures in Aiken tomorrow with highs in the mid 80s. Tonight remains fair with upper 50s overnight. light variable winds. Tomorrow’s winds turn southwest at 10 mph.
At a recent school board meeting only three students received awards while James Gallman Jr. stood again with James Gallman Sr. in the audience. Board chairman Bob Slay urged Gallman to come forward, joking that they had at least one Gallman.
James Stephens, 48, becomes the fifth heart transplant patient at University Hospital with Kenneth Burke, 38, the sixth. Donors from Florida supplied both hearts. Stephens’ transplant completed at 3 a.m. with the new heart beating within 45 minutes. Both men have ischemic cardiomyopathy and were listed as critical but stable.
The county council will consider amending the development standards ordinance to remove the Belvedere area from the North Augusta fringe district and review reciprocal planning with the cities of Aiken and North Augusta. It will also hear proposed funding for local fire departments and EMS charges for coroner calls.
The Aiken County Board of Education will hold a special session to discuss redistricting for single member district representation. NAACP leaders Rev. Alfred Vance Mrs. A P Nivens and Augustus Stephens urged the move and urged a response within 30 days while noting persistent racial disparities in teacher demographics.
Over 100 cases fill this week’s Aiken County General Sessions Court docket with two murder prosecutions. Betty Joan Moyer faces charges in a shooting death of her husband while Don Preston Williams is charged in a December shooting death of Cyrus Lee Howard found in a car beside a pine tree near his home.
President Reagan addressed German students at Hambach Castle urging youth to build a Europe united and free and to oppose nuclear war. He supported German unity, promoted Star Wars defense, and urged high tech careers while warning of global dangers. Tens of thousands protested U.S. bases in Spain seeking NATO withdrawal.
President Reagan continues a 10 day European swing with events in Bonn Ramstein and Hambach castle for student address. In Madrid he meets King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and dines with Spanish leaders. He then goes to Strasbourg address the European Parliament and Lisbon for talks with Prime Minister Soares and the National Assembly. The trip ends with Quelez Palace departure ceremonies and return to Washington.
