Wilcox Overbeck Nuclear Leader Dies in Aiken
Wilcox P. Overbeck, 68, pioneer of the first nuclear chain reaction and former Savannah River Laboratory director, died at his Aiken home. Memorial services set for 7 p.m. at George Funeral Home Chapel. He helped design reactor instrumentation and earned the 1966 Atomic Energy Commission citation for service in the nation’s nuclear program. He worked with Du Pont at SRL from 1961 to 1967 and previously joined Enrico Fermi’s group in 1942.
