Honorary Byrnes statue unveiled at Aiken County Courthouse
A crowd of dignitaries gathered at the Aiken County Courthouse for the unveiling of a half life size statue of James F Byrnes. Senator Strom Thurmond praised Byrnes career from courthouse stenographer to governor to U S secretary of state. Byrnes, a Charleston native, married Maude Perkins Busch of Aiken for 66 years and died in 1972 after a four decade Washington career starting with his 1910 congressional election.
