A masked intruder robbed Security Federal on Martintown Road in North Augusta in an early morning heist. The suspect, described as a white male with gray hair, wore jeans and a checkered flannel shirt and used a bag to carry cash. Bloodhounds were deployed but could not locate a trail.
City of Aiken Animal Control reports two rabies cases in the past week, a rabid raccoon found on Silver Bluff Road and a rabid fox near Hitchcock Park. Officials urge vaccination for pets and announce upcoming $3 rabies clinics at New Ellenton City Hall, Water Works, Aiken Vet Clinics, and Son's Super for dogs and cats.
Downtown Aiken hosts the Kiwanis Clubs 25th annual tricycle races to raise funds for local charitable projects. Children ages 3 through 9 race on a temporary Newberry Street track with sponsors including Osbon Cleaners Hutson Etherredge Henna Chevrolet and major sponsor Westinghouse contributing 1000 dollars. Revenue nears 8000 dollars to benefit local schools and Cir cle K and other key clubs.
The What Parents Want Award honors Aiken County public schools for fifth straight year citing excellence in meeting parental goals. School leader Barry Head notes newsletters and open access to admins keep parents engaged, while the district touts solid academics and favorable teacher recruitment.
Kevin K. Johnson, 28, of Belvedere, sentenced to life for the November 1996 killings of Creighton Jackson and Michael Cooper, tells Judge Thomas W. Cooper a post conviction relief hearing that his trial was unfair. He cites defense strategy, interrogation of a co defendant Miss Ladin, and her plea bargain as weaknesses. Johnson says letters from Ladin tainted the case as she aided in disposing of evidence.
The 11th Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at the North Augusta Community Center featured Rev. Ken Nelson of St. John's UMC in Aiken urging action alongside prayer. Nelson criticized cynicism toward officials and called for investment in education and enlightenment over prisons.
