Senate flag removal bill gains floor debate status

In Columbia the House Rules Committee voted 10 to 4 to grant special status to a Senate bill proposing removal of Confederate flags from the State House dome and chambers. The measure would replace flags with a square battle flag near a monument at Main and Gervais streets.

AHS Senior Lee Mangiante Wins National Merit Scholarship

Lee Mangiante, senior at Aiken High School, is a National Merit Scholarship winner aiming for neurology. She plans to attend the University of South Carolina Honors College this fall with biology as her major and speaks fluent German. She served as drum major and has strong science, math, English, social studies, and band credits.

Newlyweds Frank and Ella Ussry prove love endures across years

Frank Ussry aged 77 and Ella Jane Newsome 76 married April 15 at First Baptist Church of Warrenville. They met 60 years ago as teens and say they fell in love after friendship. The couple plans one day to travel and focus on family.

Aiken County Council Sets Local Option Sales Tax Commission

The Aiken County Council approved a six member commission to consider funding capital projects via a one cent local option sales tax. Three members come from the council, with four others to be appointed if local governments don’t nominate. Cities of Aiken and North Augusta get one appointment each. the sixth requires consensus among other municipalities. The tax would need a voter referendum and funds would go to voter approved projects. County Administrator William Shepherd said it could pave about 90 miles of dirt roads, fund the Bobby Jones Expressway, and, with future funds, reach 150 miles of dirt roads.

County Paving Plans and Tax Cut Drive Local Road Work

County administrator William Shepherd cuts the road maintenance fee from 15 to 10 dollars per vehicle annually as Georgia counties consider using the one cent local option tax for a broad set of projects. The council’s resolution lists highways roads and bridges among many public works such as water sewer pools EMS buildings and police stations. The enabling ordinance must set priorities if the tax funds more than one purpose.

Lobster Races in Aiken Set for Friday Night Lights

The 16th annual Aiken Lobster Races return Friday from 5 30 to 11 pm at Lobster Downs in downtown Aiken. Fifteen hundred sponsors bought lobsters for five stairstep tanks as 10 000 attendees help fund Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center TriDevelopment Center and Aiken County Special Olympics.

Budget for Fiscal 2001 Near Sixty Three Million

A Fiscal 2001 budget of slightly under 63 million was presented Tuesday night. Sheriff said the plan includes a 4 percent raise for regular workers and 3 percent for elected and appointed staff. The administrator noted funds for an employee holiday bonus and a tuition assistance program, with no property tax increase.
