Energy Secretary Hazel O Leary unveiled a four year plan to slim the DOE by eliminating redundant management and cutting costs. The Strategic Realignment and Downsizing Initiative targets 12 of 16 Washington offices and trims headquarters by 2338 posts while field offices cut 1450 from 7050, with Savannah River Site not immediately affected. DOE spokesman Jim Guisti of Savannah River says Aiken will see no early cuts though travel expenses may face later reductions.
